Girl Unite #1 "Starting a Fashion Startup as a Student"

Hello! Welcome to our first issue of the "Girls Unite" series. In this series, you will meet many incredible girls and ladies across different industries sharing their stories and giving advice.

In this issue, we would like to introduce Beverly, a university student, banking intern and entrepreneur who specialises in fashion retail. She founded her online eCommerce "For Old Time Sake Co" where she designs and handmakes beautiful accessories using flowers and resin. In just one year, she has gained over 2,000 followers on social media and has collaborated with Delegate x WeWork, Carouselland, Singapore Art Week x SAM and The Local People.

We sat down with Beverly to learn more about her and her entrepreneurship journey.

Q: Hello Beverly, thank you for taking the time to conduct this interview for our "Girls Unite" series. In a few words, could you introduce yourself and your business.

A: Hi I’m Bev! I am a Year 3 History Major student in the National University of Singapore, but I am currently on an internship at a bank now! I also run a small business on the side called For Old Time Sake Co!!

For Old Time Sake Co (FOTS) is about collective collaboration between our community. Apart from handmade resin accessories, we also do many Do-It-Yourself (DIY) creation accessories where our audience gets to decide what we produce!

Q: Wow, you are a history student and you also run your own business. What inspired you to start For Old Time Sake Co?

A: FOTS was created because I wanted to find an unorthodox way to share my love of history with my audience! Many of my pieces are actually inspired by real-life heroes (those of whom I take inspiration from). For example, some of my pieces are named after heroes in history, such as Diane, who is named after the late Princess Diane of Wales.

I also love florals and designing accessories. Therefore, I wanted to create a place where I could share my love of design and creation with my audience.

Q: Q: In your one year of running For Old Time Sake Co, what are some of the greatest challenges you faced while running your business?

A: The biggest challenge by far is balancing school, internship and FOTS! Other than that, it is learning the importance of managing my financials --because ultimately at the core of every business is their financials!

Q: For Old Time Sake Co has come a long way since its beginning. What are some of your proudest moments of running your business?

A: My proudest moment is probably when I made my first collection and the whole collection sold out. It gave me the confidence to continue.

Q: As a young fashion retail entrepreneurship yourself, what do you feel about the entrepreneurship and retail scene in Singapore?

A: It’s definitely growing! You will also meet many amazing people who are creative and driven which always inspires me to do better.

Q: How do you manage your time while being a student and running a business?

A: I don't 😂

Q: For our readers, do you have any advice for students out there who are interested in starting their own business?

A: Just do it! Don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is the best teacher and will eventually lead you to the place you were meant to be.
